Established on 11th October 2012 by a visionary group of leaders, the Community Health Society Malaysia (CHSM) is a national association comprising of dedicated public health physician/professionals who has passion towards the field of public health. CHSM is committed towards the promotion of healthy life to the community and is in accordance with the definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The purpose and mission of the Society was defined in its constitutional article which are to:
- promote community health disciplines to the community through the activities of research, training, consultation and publication
- provide a platform for the development of human capital health professionals in the community to meet the needs of the profession, discipline and challenges related to community health
- Become a platform for bridging community health professionals with industries and the community through national and international network.
With the collaboration of public health professional from various speciality areas such as health service management, epidemiology, biostatistics, occupational and environmental health, family health as well as health promotion in identifying health characteristic of a certain community, this will help in improving the health of a community ranging from improving access to medical care to public health communications campaigns. The success of any community health programmes relies upon the transfer of information from public health professionals to the general public as a whole.
Even though CHSM is still in its infancy stage, it has however successfully contributed to the increasing and enhancing public health knowledge through community-based research in public health that focuses on social, structural, and physical environmental inequities through active involvement of community members, organizational representatives, and researchers in all aspects of the research process. Some of the activities includes organizing workshop and seminars such as Health Economics Seminar for Healthcare Professionals, book publishing, grant management and the latest effort is to create its own e-Journal publication called the International Journal of Public Health and Clinical Sciences. This e-Journal is hope to foster learning in many ways. All level whether they are students, academicians or public health professionals can actively engaged in their own learning, scientific researches as well as evidence based public health practices and have the opportunity to clarify and reflect upon their thinking and findings.
There is no doubt that there will be challenges in the years to come. As one often says “The roughest roads often lead to the top”. It is hope that CHSM will become one of the platform for all public health professionals to come together and continues to grow to become a well renowned association that is recognized locally as well as internationally.
